Cavalry and infantry deployed together, from George Monk’s Observations upon Political & Military Affairs. Infantry support for cavalry wings usually consisted only of musketeers, but these plans show battalions of pikemen and musketeers (the musketeers being the dots and the pikemen the squares). This may represent the practice of English forces fighting in Ireland or it may simply be Monk’s personal preference.

Infantry in square. An infantry formation was composed of both musketeers and pikemen, and, as the bayonet had not yet been introduced, the whole formation depended upon its pikemen as defence against cavalry. Most manuals include a square or oblong formation of this type as defence against cavalry. This example is from Monk’s Observations upon Political & Military Affairs.
